John Mayer,
who had joined Kansas' Vinyl Confessions "in 1982, dominated the group
next album, six of the nine songs. Elephant looked a little bewildered by his
new situation ("Everybody's My Friend"), while Kerry Livgren, leader
of the band, seemed exhausted by the pressure to sell records
("Mainstream"). Kansas turned to a more hard rock sound. However, the
enervation of the group was palpable, and spread to his fans: 'Drastic
Measures' was the least successful album since its debut in Kansas. As expected,
it was also caused the dissolution of the group. Kerry Livgren was dedicated to
his solo career and John Elefante became his producer.
